Stories For His Glory

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

We are looking for testimonies of what God has done in your life, whether it be in your salvation or in healing, provision, protection or some other dealing of God in your life. The best of these (provided there are sufficient entries of a high enough standard) will be published in the Stories For His Glory anthology in both print and digital formats.

This business of running writing competitions is quite a learning process, and there are a couple of things that we have learned from the competitions we have run so far. The first is that sometimes when people sign up for our newsletter, the return email giving them the competition details gets lost (or thrown into their junk folder by some over-zealous spam filter.) We still want people to sign up for our newsletter so that we can keep you up to date on competitions and results, but we will now add you to the list automatically if you enter the competition. And to avoid the problem of lost details, you can now access the competition page directly from this site (when you finish reading this page.)

The second problem we have seen is that people don’t read the rules, and as a result get disqualified for not following them. To do that is a waste of your time and entry fee, and of the judges’ time. So, before we go any further, please read the rules below. (You can also download a .pdf copy for your own records here.)

By submitting an entry to the Birdcatcher Books Stories For His Glory Competition 2017, you are agreeing to be bound by the following Terms and Conditions.

This competition is for Christians. We are looking for testimonies of God’s working in your life. It might be a salvation testimony, or a testimony of God’s healing, provision, protection or some other way in which He has touched your life.

The competition is open to residents of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA or UK, aged 18 or over on 1st November 2017, except direct relatives of the management of Birdcatcher Books or the judges. Entrants must indicate their acceptance of the Nicene Creed as a basic statement of faith. Anyone who has won a cash prize in a Birdcatcher Books competition within the last 12 months in not eligible.

The competition will commence on 1st November 2017 and close at 11.59pm Melbourne time on 28th February 2018. Any entries received outside of this time frame will be disqualified. Shortlisted entries will be announced via the Birdcatcher Books newsletter on 30th April 2018, and winners will be announced in the newsletter and on the Birdcatcher Books web site on 31st May 2018.

First prize $AU250, Second prize $AU100, Third prize $AU50. Although contestants are allowed multiple entries, no contestant may win more than one cash prize. Should two or more entries from the same contestant be judged among the top three, the contestant will be awarded the highest prize for which he/she is eligible, and the next prize(s) will be awarded to the next qualified contestant(s).

Winners will be notified by email. Entrants are responsible to ensure that their email address is correct and current, and that Birdcatcher Books is notified of any changes. By entering the competition, entrants are agreeing to their name being added to Birdcatcher Books mailing list so that they can be notified of results of this competition, and of upcoming competitions.

Entry fees are $AU8 for one entry; $AU15 for two entries; $21 for three entries, to be paid by PayPal at the time of entry. (NOTE you can use PayPal to make a payment, even if you don’t have a PayPal account. However, if you are a winner you will need a PayPal account to claim your prize. Signing up with PayPal is free and easy.)

Should some unforeseen circumstance prevent the competition from going ahead, entry fees will be refunded.

In all other circumstances, entry fees are non-refundable.

Stories: Entries should be stories – i.e., they should include the 3 essential elements of characters, setting and plot – not simply memoirs or descriptive pieces.

True and personal: Stories must be true, and your own personal experience, and should be written in the first person.

Well written and edited: The fact that this is a Christian competition should not be an excuse for sloppy writing. You need to write for the Lord’s glory not only in WHAT you write, but in HOW you write. Take the time to tell your story as well and as powerfully as possible, and make sure that you check your spelling, grammar and punctuation before submitting your entry.

Length: Stories must be between 1000 and 3000 words, not including the title.

Entries that fall outside of these ranges will be disqualified.

Original and unpublished: Entries must be the original work of the entrant, and must not have been previously published in any format, either print or digital, nor have won a prize in any other writing competition, even if not published. Entrants undertake not to submit their entries for publication anywhere else, nor to enter them in any other competitions, until after the close of this competition.

Copyright: Copyright remains with the author, but the author grants Birdcatcher Books the right to publish the story, if chosen, as part of an anthology in both print and digital formats, and in the case of the three cash prize winners, on the Birdcatcher Books web site, with no further payment being made to the author. If chosen for publication, the entrant undertakes not to offer the entry for publication elsewhere until at least 12 months after the publication of the anthology.

8. NO-NOs (these things will get you disqualified, with no refund of your fees.)

Not following the rules: In every competition we have run thus far, there have been some people who have been disqualified because they have not followed the rules about length, subject matter etc. Don’t be one of them.

Unsuitability: Stories should be suitable for a Christian readership, and should be glorifying to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Foreign languages: In past competitions we have had some stories which have contained foreign phrases. This can create difficulties, so we will not be allowing it in any future competitions.

Badmouthing others: Often testimonies come about as a result of other people’s bad conduct toward us. However, that is not an excuse to write a story about how terrible those people are. Keep it positive.

Anything that dishonours the Lord: It should go without saying that this is no place for foul language, blatant sex or violence, or any kind of occult theme. If your testimony is about coming out of those areas, be sure that you present it in such a way that the Lord, not the devil, gets the glory.

NOTE: The ONLY way to enter this competition is by using the online form. Entries submitted by email or post will be disqualified.

Rules – before anything else, make sure that you have read the rules, and are prepared to abide by them. Unfortunately a number of entries in previous competitions were disqualified because they did not follow the rules. Don’t waste your effort and money, and our time.

Fees – Pay using the PayPal button on the page.

Entry Form – Complete the details on the online form. Be sure to check the buttons at the bottom saying that you have read the rules and will abide by them. Paste your story or stories in the spaces provided. Don’t forget to click “submit.”

To enter the competition, you will also need to agree to the Author Declaration below (download the .pdf here.)
